“It is narrated that during the death sickness of the Prophet (pbuh) while the people were praying, the Prophet (pbuh) drew back his curtain and stood looking at them. They say his face was intensely illuminating, and there was nothing more beautiful than His face when he looked at them on that day. And then… He smiled. He signaled to them to continue the Salāh and then he closed his curtain. The Prophet (pbuh) passed away later that day…

Darkness fell upon Madīnah tonight, people cried
For God had given his beloved messenger a choice
For so long, he had struggled now he’d won
The hearts of the best believers, a generation so strong

Come, let’s go to Madīnah to see an enchanted morning.

aab-e-zamzam to piyaa khuub bujhāyeeN pyaaseN
aao juud-e-shah-e-kawsar ka bhi dariyaa dekho
You have quenched your thirst by drinking water from Zamzam;
Come, see the sea of generosity of the Prince of Kawthar.
آب زم زم تو پیا خوب بجھائیں پیاسیں
آؤ جود شہ کوثر کا بھی دریا دیکھو

zeyr-e-mīzaab miley khuub karam key cheeN.Tey
abr-e-raĥmat ka yahaaN zor barasnaa dekho
Many droplets of grace were found under the Golden Ditch [Mīzāb]
Come here; see a downpour in torrents from the Clouds of Mercy.
زیر میزاب ملے خوب کرم کے چھینٹے
ابر رحمت کا یہاں روز برسنا دیکھو

dhoom dekhi hai dar-e-kábah pey beytāboN kee
un key mushtāqoN meiN ĥasrat ka taDapna dekho
You have seen an impatient crowd throng at the door of the Kábah
Come here; see the passion and anguish of those who yearn for him.
دھوم دیکھی ہے در کعبہ پہ بیتابوں کی
ان کے مشتاقوں میں حسرت کا تڑپنا دیکھو

misl-e-parwaana phira kartey they jis shamáh key gird
apni us shamáh ko parwāna yahaaN kaa dekho
The Kábah, the lamp you circled in the manner of a firefly;
Come, see that light of yours [Kábah] sacrifice itself at his altar.
مثل پروانہ پھرا کرتے تھے جس شمع کے گرد
اپنی اس شمع کو پروانہ یہاں کا دیکھو

khuub aankhoN se lagaaya hai ghilaaf-e-kábah
qaşr-e-mahboob key pardey ka bhi jalwaa dekho
You have touched the drapes of Kábah [Ghilaf] with your eyes [in reverence];
Come, behold the luminous curtains that adorn the palace of the Beloved.
خوب آنکھو سے لگایا ہے غلاف کعبہ
قصر محبوب کے پردے کا بھی جلوہ دیکھو

waaN muţeeyoN ka jigar khawf sey paani paaya
yaaN siyah kaaroN ka daaman pey machalna dekho
The hearts of the pious trembled with fear [of the Almighty] in Makkah;
Come, see the sinners throng the beloved’s place, eagerly awaiting pardon.
واں مطیعوں کا جگر خوف سے پانی پایا
یاں سیہ کاروں کا دامن پہ مچلنا دیکھو

awwalīN khaana-e-Ĥaq ki to ziyaayeN dekhīN
aakhirīN bayt-e-nabiy ka bhi tajallā dekho
You have seen the rays of light emanating from the House of Allāh as the Haj began;
And as you end, come, see the beams of light radiating from the house of Rasulallah Sallallahu ‘Alayhi wa Sallam.
اولین خانہء حق کی ضیائیں دیکھیں
آخریں بیت نبی کا بھی تجلا دیکھو

zeenat-e-kábah meiN tha laakh árūsoN ka banaaw
jalwa farmaa yahaN kawnayn ka duulhaa dekho
The Kábah was bedecked in the splendor of a hundred thousand brides;
Come see, the majesty of the resting place of the Prince of the Universe!
زینت کعبہ میں تھا لاکھ عروسوں کا بناؤ
جلوہ فرما یہاں کونین کا دولھا دیکھو

ayman-e-ţur ka tha rukn-e-yamāni meiN furogh
shúla-e-ţur yahan anjuman aaraa dekho
The Yemeni Corner [Rukn e Yamani] appeared as the valley of Ayman in the mountains of Tur;
Come, see the light which irradiated the Mountain of Tur shine here.
ایمن طور کا تھا رکن یمانی میں فروغ
شعلہء طور یہاں انجمن آرا دیکھو

mihr-e-mādar ka mazaa deyti thi aaghosh-e-ĥaţeem
jin pe maaN baap fidaa yaaN karam unkaa dekho
The arms of the Hateem had the warmth of a mother’s lap;
Come here; see the benevolence of the Prince, on whose feet our parents be sacrificed.
مہر مادر کا مزہ دیتی ہے آغوش حطیم
جن پہ ماں باپ فدا یاں کرم ان کا دیکھو

árz-e-ĥājat mein rahaa kábah kafeel-ul-ĥujjāj
aaO ab daad rasī-e-shah-e-ţaybah dekho
The Kábah was the guarantor for the acceptance of the prayers of the Hajīs;
Come see, the deliverance and bounty of the Prince of Taybah
عرض حاجت میں رہا کعبہ کفیل الحجاج
آؤ اب داد رسیء شہ طیبہ دیکھو

dho chukaa zulmat-e-dil bausay-e-sang-e-aswad
khaak bausīy-e-madīnah ka bhi rutbaa dekho
The darkness and evil in the hearts was washed away by kissing the Black Stone [ĥajar aswad];
Come see the exalted station of kissing the dust of Madīnah.
دھو چکا ظلمت دل بوسہء سنگ اسود
خاک بوسیء مدینہ کا بھی رتبہ دیکھو

kar chukī rifát-e-kábah pey nazar parwaazeN
Topi ab thaam key khaak-e-dar-e-waala dekho
Your sights soared and beheld the Kábah’s summit;
Hold your headgear as you look at the dust of my beloved’s door.
کر چکی رفعت کعبہ پر نظر پروازیں
ٹوپی اب تھام کے خاک در والا دیکھو

be niyaazi sey wahaan kaaNmpti paayi ţāát
josh-e-raĥmat pey yahaaN naaz gunah ka dekho
Piety shivered with fear of the Sovereign’s Awe;
See the Sin relieved and celebrate at the deluge of Mercy.
بے نیازی سے وہاں کانپتی پائی طاعت
جوش رحمت پہ یہاں ناز گنہ کا دیکھو

jumáh-e-makkah tha íyd ahl-e-íbādat key liye
mujrimO! aaO yahaaN íyd-e-dushumba dekho
The Friday in Makkah was a celebration [Eyd] of the pious worshipper;
O Sinners! Come celebrate the festival of Monday here.
جمعہ مکہ تھا عید اہل عبادت کے لیے
مجرمو آؤ یہاں عید دو شنبہ دیکھو

multazam sey to gale lag key nikaaley armaaN
adab-O-shauq ka yaaN baaham ulajhnaa dekho
Ye fulfilled your long held desires by embracing the Multazam [threshold of the door to Kábah]
Come, see the conflict; of both Reverence and Yearning wrestle at his threshold.
ملتزم سے تو گلے لگ کے نکالے ارماں
ادب و شوق کا یاں باہم الجھنا دیکھو

khuub masáā meiN ba ummīd-e-şafā dauD liye
rah-e-janaaN ki şafaa ka bhi tamāshā dekho
You ran between Şafā and Marwā in the hope of being cleansed;
Come, see the scene on the cleansing path that leads to the beloved’s place. ŞallAllāhu álayhi wa sallam.
خوب مسعی میں باامید صفا دوڑ لیے
رہ جاناں کی صفا کا بھی تماشا دیکھو

raqs-e-bismil ki bahaareN to minaa mein dekhīN
dil-e-khuuN naaba fashan ka bhi taDapna dekho
You have seen the waltz of the writhing Bismil [the slaughtered animal] in Mina;
Come here; see the bleeding hearts writhe at the beloved’s doorstep.
رقص بسمل کی بہاریں تو منی میں دیکھیں
دل خوں نابہ فشاں کا بھی پڑپنا دیکھو

ghaur se sun to razā kábey sey aati hai şadaa
meri aankhoN sey merey pyaare ka rozah dekho!

Come, see the my beloved’s garden with my eyes
غور سے سن تو رضا کعبہ سے آتی ہے صدا

‘Shine’ is a dedication to the legacy of the 11th century scientist Ibn Al-Haytham. ‘Shine’ features on Sami Yusuf’s music score for Ahmed Salim’s short film “1001 Inventions and the World of Ibn Al-Haytham” starring Omar Sharif, his final lead performance before his death in July 2015.

‘Shine’ supports a global Ibn Al-Haytham awareness campaign from 1001 Inventions in partnership with UNESCO that is part of United Nations proclaimed ‘International Year of Light’.
